This is GJDC Karen’s 4th year teaching here.  Karen began her dance training at the age of three under Aline Martin at the Martinique School of Dance in Richmond, where she returned as an instructor under the direction of Shannon Martin Howell.  Karen continued her training and inspired and instructed dancers of all ages in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and lyrical until the closing of the school in May 2010.  She has studied dance at Virginia Commonwealth University, Tidewater Academy of Ballet, Broadway Dance Center and the Richmond Ballet Adult Program.  

Karen’s performing career has included the Richmond Ballet, Richmond Ballet Contemporary, Concert Ballet of Virginia, Norfolk Ballet and Ballet Petit.  She performed leading roles in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty.  She has served in various capacities with these companies to include Ballet Mistress, Head of Repertory, Principal dancer, Choreographer, Assistant Choreographer and Instructor and has numerous choreographic efforts to her credit.

When Karen’s not busy with dance she loves spending her time with her family and gardening. Karen is thrilled to teach for Genia Johnson Dance Company and loves sharing the joy of dance with her wonderful students!!
